Colorado moved against the national current in 2024. Where the country shifted about six points toward Donald Trump and California fell nine, Colorado’s Democratic margin slipped just two and a half — from 13.5 points in 2020 to 11.0 — one of the smallest changes anywhere. Colorado was a swing state for most of three decades: Bill Clinton carried it in 1992 by 4.3 points and lost it in 1996 by 1.4 — the same two elections in which he lost, then won, Arizona, in effect trading one state for the other — and it stayed competitive through Hillary Clinton’s 4.9-point win in 2016. Now it is reliably Democratic, and the reason sits in the suburbs north and west of Denver: Jefferson County at 19.5 points, Arapahoe at 20.1, Broomfield at 28.5, and Larimer — around Fort Collins — at 17.6, all of them Republican or competitive ground a generation ago.

What changed them is education. Colorado ranks second of the fifty states in the share of adults holding a bachelor’s degree, at 45.5 percent, and the college-educated suburb has become the Democratic Party’s surest ground. Boulder, home to the University of Colorado, gave Kamala Harris her largest margin of any metropolitan area in the country in 2024 — 55.7 points, the bluest metro in America. Even the last suburban holdout, affluent Douglas County, has softened: still Republican in 2024, but by seven points, down from the landslides it gave the party a decade ago.

The red that remains keeps to its old ground — El Paso County, which holds Colorado Springs, the Air Force Academy, and the headquarters of Focus on the Family, at 9.8 points Republican; the agricultural Eastern Plains, where Cheyenne County runs 78 points Republican; and the Western Slope around Grand Junction. But even there the floor is moving: the city of Colorado Springs, sixteen points Republican in 2016, narrowed to 3.5 in 2020 and just 2 in 2024 — toward the Democrats as the country moved the other way. Colorado’s one clear mirror of the national Latino shift is Pueblo County, around the old steel city on the southern plains, which voted Republican by five points in 2024 after generations of Democratic majorities — though the city of Pueblo itself held Democratic.

The trend has all but cleared the field of statewide Republicans: Democrats hold the governorship, both U.S. Senate seats, the five other statewide offices, and five of the eight U.S. House seats. In 2026 the state will choose a new governor — Jared Polis is term-limited — and the race has pulled a sitting U.S. senator out of Washington, with Michael Bennet giving up his seat to run against Attorney General Phil Weiser in a June 30 Democratic primary that will most likely decide the office. John Hickenlooper, the state’s other senator and a former governor, faces a primary the same day on the way to a second term. The profile underneath is affluent and secular — ninth in median household income at $95,470, fourth-lowest in poverty, and sixth in the share of residents claiming no religion — the pattern that has tracked, state by state, with the Democratic trend of the educated West.
