Demographics
Otero's economy has long centered on agriculture and the former sugar-beet industry, and its sparse, largely Hispanic and Anglo rural population has shifted steadily toward Republican presidential candidates over the past decade, widening margins with each cycle.
The Republican margin here reached fifty-one points in 1928. Between 2020 and 2024 the county moved four points toward the Republican candidate; the 2024 margin was twenty-six points.
A population of 18,321, a 67% non-Hispanic-white share, and a median household income of $54,037 describe the county. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Jefferson County and Carbon County. A non-English-speaking share of 15% reflects a meaningful Latino presence that votes, here, with the Republican grain.
