Georgia is the closest of the Sun Belt battlegrounds. Joe Biden carried it in 2020 by three-tenths of a point — 2,474,507 votes to 2,461,837, a margin of 12,670 and the first Democratic presidential win in the state since 1992. Two U.S. Senate runoffs in January 2021 sent Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff to Washington and gave the Democrats the chamber. Then the state moved back: Donald Trump won it in 2024 by 2.2 points, 2,663,117 to 2,548,017, a swing of 2.4 points against a national shift of about six. Both results turned on the suburbs north of Atlanta.

Those suburbs have changed. Cobb County, Republican at the presidential level a decade ago, voted Democratic by 14.9 points in 2024 and Gwinnett by 16.5 — and by Akashic’s analysis the two together ran about 103,000 votes stronger for the Democrats than their recent baseline, the largest such gap in Georgia. The metro core is the Democratic base: Fulton at 44.9 points, DeKalb at 64.8, Clayton at 69.2. Henry, southeast of the city, has joined them at 29.7. Against that stands the exurban edge — Forsyth at 33.1 points Republican, Cherokee at 39.0 — and the rural north, where Glascock runs 83.9, the widest margin in the state.

Underneath sits a state of 10.9 million with the largest Black share in the region: 30.7 percent, in metro Atlanta and the southwest Black Belt, where Dougherty around Albany votes Democratic by 41.1 points. Hispanic or Latino residents add 11 percent. Median household income is $77,353, below the national $80,734, and 34.9 percent of adults hold a bachelor’s degree. It is a Protestant state — ninth of the fifty in Evangelical adherents at 26.2 percent. In 2026 both marquee offices are open: an open governorship, with Brian Kemp term-limited, and Ossoff’s Senate seat, after a May 19 primary and a June 16 Republican runoff.
