Demographics
Humphreys County, anchored by Waverly on the Duck River, has shifted decisively in presidential voting over the past decade, posting a 56-point Republican margin in 2024 — one of the starker swings among mid-size Tennessee counties.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin peaked at seventy-two points in 1932 and narrowed across the late twentieth century. The 2008 election carried the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by three points. Between 2020 and 2024 the county moved six points toward the Republican candidate; the 2024 margin was fifty-six points.
The economic context is severe: a median household income of $60,616 — among the lowest at this geographic scale — and a 15% poverty rate. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Grundy County and Lake County.
