Start with the election result that mattered most. Each state opens on a designated marquee primary contest, candidate by candidate and county by county where official returns support that grain. The same map can then switch to the secondary party-participation layer. Candidate shares use every valid vote in the selected contest; participation comparisons remain explicitly separate. Official-source coverage currently includes 17 states with candidate geography, plus aggregate records for Michigan and Missouri. As of Aug 18, 2026.

The selected state opens on its designated marquee contest. Party-primary participation is a separate secondary layer, not an election margin.
The season
Every 2026 primary date. Colored state chips summarize the selected participation measure; they do not represent a contest result. * marks a split calendar.

North Carolina
North Carolina runs a SEMI-CLOSED primary: registered partisans vote their own party’s ballot and unaffiliated voters choose either. The D-vs-R split measures which primaries voters participated in, not registration.

Source. North Carolina State Board of Elections — official precinct-level export. The NCSBE results_pct export, post-canvass (file dated April 16, 2026). No federal contest went to the May 12 second primary. Built from 2,633 real precincts plus county transfer lines (absentee/provisional central counts), which carry real votes and are included in every total. U.S. House primaries exist only where contested (NC cancels uncontested primaries), so district cells marked “no primary” are structural, not missing data.
Texas
Texas runs an OPEN primary: any voter picks either party’s ballot. Contests short of a majority went to the May runoff, which is not included in these primary-day totals.

Mississippi
Mississippi runs an OPEN primary: any voter picks either party’s ballot. Contests short of a majority go to a runoff.
Candidate geography status
No candidate result is inferred from aggregate party totals.
The published source artifact for Mississippi currently carries aggregate party totals but not a complete named candidate-by-county field. The state remains available in the participation and district tables while that source gap is resolved.

Indiana
Indiana is OPEN in effect: a voter requests either ballot, subject to a loose past-support rule that is not enforced at the polls. Indiana elects no Senator and no Governor in 2026, so participation is measured across its nine House primaries rather than one statewide contest.
Candidate geography status
No candidate result is inferred from aggregate party totals.
The published source artifact for Indiana currently carries aggregate party totals but not a complete named candidate-by-county field. The state remains available in the participation and district tables while that source gap is resolved.

Louisiana
Louisiana’s congressional primaries in 2026 are closed party primaries, a change from the state’s former all-party system; only registered partisans and, where a party allows, unaffiliated voters may take a ballot.
Candidate geography status
No candidate result is inferred from aggregate party totals.
The published source artifact for Louisiana currently carries aggregate party totals but not a complete named candidate-by-county field. The state remains available in the participation and district tables while that source gap is resolved.

Alabama
Alabama runs an OPEN primary: any voter picks either party’s ballot. Contests short of a majority go to a runoff, which is carried separately from these primary-day totals.
Candidate geography status
No candidate result is inferred from aggregate party totals.
The published source artifact for Alabama currently carries aggregate party totals but not a complete named candidate-by-county field. The state remains available in the participation and district tables while that source gap is resolved.

Oregon
Oregon runs a CLOSED primary: only voters registered with a party receive that party’s ballot, and Oregon’s unaffiliated voters — a plurality of its registration since automatic registration began — receive no partisan ballot at all. So these totals are a smaller share of the electorate than an open state’s, and the two are not comparable as turnout.
Candidate geography status
No candidate result is inferred from aggregate party totals.
The published source artifact for Oregon currently carries aggregate party totals but not a complete named candidate-by-county field. The state remains available in the participation and district tables while that source gap is resolved.

California
California runs a TOP-TWO primary: there are no party ballots at all — every voter receives the same one and the two leading candidates advance regardless of party. The Democratic and Republican shares here are therefore the parties candidates state a preference for, not the ballots voters chose, and are not comparable with a party-ballot state’s.
Candidate geography status
No candidate result is inferred from aggregate party totals.
The published source artifact for California currently carries aggregate party totals but not a complete named candidate-by-county field. The state remains available in the participation and district tables while that source gap is resolved.

Maine lets unenrolled voters pick either party’s ballot; enrolled voters take their own. Maine primaries use ranked-choice voting — these are first-choice tallies for contests decided without reallocation, and final-round certified totals where RCV resolved them.

Washington
Washington runs a TOP-TWO primary: one ballot for every voter, candidates self-state a party preference printed verbatim on the ballot, and the top two finishers advance regardless of party. The D-vs-R split therefore measures the whole August electorate’s preference, not two separate party electorates.

Florida
Florida runs a CLOSED primary: only voters registered with a party may vote in it, and Florida’s no-party-affiliation voters — more than a quarter of its registration — receive no partisan ballot at all. Its 2026 U.S. Senate contest is a SPECIAL election for the seat filled by appointment.
Candidate geography status
No candidate result is inferred from aggregate party totals.
The published source artifact for Florida currently carries aggregate party totals but not a complete named candidate-by-county field. The state remains available in the participation and district tables while that source gap is resolved.

How to read the explorer
Contest result. This is the default. The candidate board and county map refer to one actual primary contest. Candidate shares use the complete candidate vote total, including every named candidate and write-in aggregate carried by the source. Selecting a candidate repaints the map to that candidate’s county vote share; the default map shows the county winner.
Party participation. This is a separate optional layer comparing how many voters participated in Democratic and Republican primaries using the state’s named every-ballot measure. In separate-party systems, its denominator is D + R participation because the figures come from different primary contests. Washington’s unified top-two layer retains Other preferences in its balance. Neither is labeled or stored as an election margin.
Unavailable candidate geography. Michigan and Missouri currently publish aggregate records in this hub without a complete named candidate-by-county field. The explorer states that limitation instead of substituting participation colors or inferring a candidate result.
Source. Official state election authorities and official state results endpoints, preserved in committed source captures · candidate totals reconciled against county totals; participation retained as a separately named analytical measure · 2026 primary results; county boundaries from the atlas county geometry. Candidate-geography coverage expands only when the source publishes enough information to reconcile the complete field. Real returns — nothing estimated.
