St. George incorporated in southeastern East Baton Rouge Parish in 2024, after the Louisiana Supreme Court's 4–3 ruling in Broome v. Rials upheld an October 2019 incorporation vote that had passed with 54 percent of the vote. The new city absorbed six former census-designated places — Shenandoah, Oak Hills Place, Old Jefferson, Inniswold, Village St. George, and Westminster — and counted 78,536 residents in the Census Bureau's July 2025 estimate, sixth among Louisiana's incorporated cities. Within its current boundaries the presidential margin has narrowed from R+53.2 in 2008 to R+28.7 in 2024.
The territory that became St. George has voted Republican across the full block-level record. The presidential margin within today's boundaries was R+53.2 in 2008 and R+53.1 in 2012, then narrowed in each cycle that followed — R+40.4 in 2016, R+38.6 in 2020, and R+28.7 in 2024, a 24.5-point movement toward Democratic candidates over five cycles. Presidential turnout inside the boundary grew from 35,574 votes in 2008 to 43,913 in 2024.
The 2020 Census counted 79,389 residents within the city's current limits: 68.0 percent non-Hispanic white, 16.2 percent Black, 6.8 percent Hispanic, and 5.4 percent Asian. Median household income stands near $84,800 — a population-weighted composite of 2020–2024 ACS figures for the absorbed places and the parish remainder — against $63,071 for East Baton Rouge Parish as a whole. The incorporation campaign grew out of an earlier push to create a separate southeast-parish school district; Governor Jeff Landry appointed Dustin Yates interim mayor in May 2024.
