Demographics
Hamilton County sits at the Colorado border in the sparsely settled western Kansas shortgrass prairie, where a small, agriculture-dependent population has produced some of the widest Republican presidential margins in the state over the last decade.
Hamilton County has leaned Republican in recent presidential elections, reaching a Democratic margin of twenty-one points in 1932. Between 2020 and 2024 it moved one point toward the Republican candidate — part of the sharpest rightward shift recorded among any group of places in the country.
Its demographics describe the shift: a 63% non-Hispanic-white share, a median household income of $70,250, and a population of 2,471. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Hodgeman County and Cheyenne County.
