Demographics
Douglas County's R+72 margin in 2024 places it among the most lopsided presidential results in the state, reflecting the Ozarks region's deep rural consolidation around Republican candidates over the past two decades.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin peaked at three points in 1896 and narrowed across the late twentieth century. The 1900 election carried the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by twenty-nine points. Between 2020 and 2024 the county moved two points toward the Republican candidate; the 2024 margin was seventy-two points.
The economic context is severe: a median household income of $45,985 — among the lowest at this geographic scale — and a 18% poverty rate. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Laclede County and Wright County.
