Demographics
Clay County's small, predominantly white rural population on the Kentucky border has delivered Republican presidential margins above 60 points in each of the last several cycles, making it among the most reliably one-sided counties in the state.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin peaked at forty-one points in 1940 and narrowed across the late twentieth century. The 2008 election carried the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by fourteen points. Between 2020 and 2024 the county moved ten points toward the Republican candidate; the 2024 margin was sixty-seven points.
The economic context is severe: a median household income of $39,972 — among the lowest at this geographic scale — and a 24% poverty rate. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Marion County and Warren County.
