Demographics
Perry County's R+69.5 margin in 2024 places it among the most one-sided rural counties in the state. With fewer than 8,000 residents and an economy long tied to timber and small-scale agriculture, its electorate moves in near-unanimous fashion in federal contests.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin peaked at sixty-two points in 1936 and narrowed across the late twentieth century. The 2008 election carried the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by nine points. Between 2020 and 2024 the county moved six points toward the Republican candidate; the 2024 margin was sixty-nine points.
The economic context is severe: a median household income of $55,972 — among the lowest at this geographic scale — and a 18% poverty rate. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Stewart County and Overton County.
