Demographics
This sparsely populated Appalachian county in northeastern Tennessee recorded an R+79.8 presidential margin in 2024, placing it among the most one-sided results in the state. Coal-era economic geography and a predominantly white, rural population shape its consistently uniform voting pattern.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin peaked at two points in 1912 and narrowed across the late twentieth century. Between 2020 and 2024 the county moved two points toward the Republican candidate; the 2024 margin was eighty points.
The economic context is severe: a median household income of $44,711 — among the lowest at this geographic scale — and a 23% poverty rate. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Hardin County and Union County.
