Northampton sits at the southern tip of Virginia's Eastern Shore, isolated from the mainland by the Chesapeake Bay. Its majority-minority population — driven by a large Black voting bloc — has consistently returned Democratic margins in a region otherwise trending Republican.
Its margins are typically close. The Democratic margin reached seventy-five points in 1916; the Republican margin reached thirty-seven points in 1972. Between 2020 and 2024 the county moved four points toward the Republican candidate; the 2024 margin was six points.
Its demographics sit near national norms: a 57% non-Hispanic-white share, a median household income of $61,632, and a 18% poverty rate. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Orange County and Liberty County.
