Sumter County's explosive population growth — driven almost entirely by The Villages master-planned retirement community — has made it one of the fastest-growing counties in the U.S., with a distinctly older, white electorate that has produced some of Florida's widest presidential margins.
The Republican margin here reached fifty-four points in 1972. Between 2020 and 2024 the county moved one point toward the Republican candidate; the 2024 margin was thirty-eight points.
A population of 143,408, a 85% non-Hispanic-white share, and a median household income of $76,508 describe the county. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Polk County and La Paz County.
