Sumter County's explosive population growth — driven almost entirely by The Villages master-planned retirement community — has made it one of the fastest-growing counties in the U.S., with a distinctly older, white electorate that has produced some of Florida's widest presidential margins.
Across the recorded series it reached a Democratic high of 80.8 points in 1940 and a Republican high of 53.7 points in 1972. Between 2020 and 2024 the county moved 1.5 points toward the Republican candidate; the 2024 margin was 37.6 points.
A population of 143,408, a 84% non-Hispanic-white share, and a median household income of $76,508 describe the county. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Brunswick County and Yavapai County.
