Demographics
Vermillion County sits along the Illinois border in Indiana's west-central coal country, with a population under 17,000. Its R+44.7 presidential margin in 2024 reflects a broader rural realignment that has reshaped once-competitive industrial communities across the region.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin peaked at twenty-seven points in 1964 and narrowed across the late twentieth century. The 2012 election carried the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by seven points. Between 2020 and 2024 the county moved four points toward the Republican candidate; the 2024 margin was forty-five points.
The economic context is severe: a median household income of $60,200 — among the lowest at this geographic scale — and a 15% poverty rate. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Yellow Medicine County and Arenac County.
