Demographics
Breckinridge County's 2024 presidential margin of R+58.2 reflects a broader realignment across western Kentucky's rural counties, where Democratic registration has historically been high but voting patterns shifted sharply over the past decade.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin peaked at twenty-six points in 1964 and narrowed across the late twentieth century. The 1996 election carried the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by three points. Between 2020 and 2024 the county moved six points toward the Republican candidate; the 2024 margin was fifty-eight points.
The economic context is severe: a median household income of $55,843 — among the lowest at this geographic scale — and a 21% poverty rate. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Pendleton County and Grant County.
