Demographics
Elliott County's 2024 presidential margin of R+61.9 reflects a broader Appalachian shift that has moved small, rural eastern Kentucky counties from competitive swing territory to some of the most lopsided results in the state.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin peaked at seventy-two points in 1964 and narrowed across the late twentieth century. The 2016 election carried the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by forty-four points. Between 2020 and 2024 the county moved eleven points toward the Republican candidate; the 2024 margin was sixty-two points.
The economic context is severe: a median household income of $45,776 — among the lowest at this geographic scale — and a 25% poverty rate. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Wapello County and Swift County.
