Demographics
Muhlenberg County's political identity shifted sharply as its coal industry declined over recent decades. In 2024 it delivered an R+54.4 presidential margin, reflecting a broader realignment across western Kentucky's former mining belt.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin peaked at thirty-three points in 1992 and narrowed across the late twentieth century. The 2004 election carried the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by one point. Between 2020 and 2024 the county moved six points toward the Republican candidate; the 2024 margin was fifty-four points.
The economic context is severe: a median household income of $51,927 — among the lowest at this geographic scale — and a 18% poverty rate. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Perry County and Dickenson County.
