Demographics
Morgan County's R+63.5 margin in 2024 places it among the most Republican-leaning counties in a state that has shifted sharply rightward over the past two decades, driven by a rural, coal-country demographic that has realigned dramatically since 2000.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin peaked at seventy-one points in 1964 and narrowed across the late twentieth century. The 2000 election carried the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by ten points. Between 2020 and 2024 the county moved seven points toward the Republican candidate; the 2024 margin was sixty-three points.
The economic context is severe: a median household income of $47,913 — among the lowest at this geographic scale — and a 17% poverty rate. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Magoffin County and Russell County.
