McKenzie County sits atop the Bakken Formation, making it one of North Dakota's top oil-producing counties. Its sparse population and extractive-industry base have accompanied some of the widest presidential margins in the state.
The Democratic margin here peaked at sixty points in 1936. Between 2020 and 2024 the county moved one point toward the Republican candidate; the 2024 margin was sixty-nine points.
