Demographics
Gonzales County, anchored by its small namesake seat southeast of San Antonio, has delivered lopsided Republican presidential margins for decades, with 2024's R+54.8 result continuing a pattern common to rural South Texas counties outside the Rio Grande corridor.
Gonzales County has leaned Republican in recent presidential elections, reaching a Democratic margin of eighty-two points in 1932. Between 2020 and 2024 it moved seven points toward the Republican candidate — part of the sharpest rightward shift recorded among any group of places in the country.
Its demographics describe the shift: a 54% non-Hispanic-white share, a median household income of $58,672, and a population of 19,851. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Lynn County and Crook County.
