Demographics
Midland County posts some of the most lopsided presidential margins in Texas, a reflection of its identity as the administrative and corporate center of the Permian Basin, where the petrochemical industry anchors both the workforce and political culture.
Midland County has leaned Republican in recent presidential elections, reaching a Democratic margin of eighty-five points in 1916. Between 2020 and 2024 it moved four points toward the Republican candidate — part of the sharpest rightward shift recorded among any group of places in the country.
Its demographics describe the shift: a 56% non-Hispanic-white share, a median household income of $92,874, and a population of 174,801. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Kerr County and Kendall County.
