Demographics
Despite covering nearly 4,000 square miles of Chihuahuan Desert, Presidio holds fewer than 8,000 residents — most concentrated in the border town of Presidio — and has backed Democratic presidential nominees by wide margins for decades.
Presidio County has leaned Democratic in recent presidential elections, reaching a Democratic margin of eighty points in 1916. Between 2020 and 2024 it moved three points toward the Republican candidate — part of the sharpest rightward shift recorded among any group of places in the country.
Its demographics describe the shift: a 45% non-Hispanic-white share, a median household income of $43,802, and a population of 5,930. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Wilkinson County and Macon County.
