Demographics
Lincoln County's R+62.5 margin in 2024 reflects a broader Appalachian shift that has made once-competitive coalfield counties among the most reliably Republican in the state. Its population of roughly 22,000 has declined steadily as the regional economy contracted.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin peaked at thirty points in 1996 and narrowed across the late twentieth century. The 2004 election carried the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by one point. Between 2020 and 2024 the county moved eight points toward the Republican candidate; the 2024 margin was sixty-two points.
The economic context is severe: a median household income of $46,205 — among the lowest at this geographic scale — and a 23% poverty rate. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Dickenson County and Summers County.
