Demographics
Logan County, once a bedrock of union-driven Democratic loyalty in the southern coalfields, has swung more than 80 points toward Republicans since 2000 as the coal economy contracted and the region's cultural identity realigned with national conservative trends.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin peaked at sixty-four points in 1964 and narrowed across the late twentieth century. The 2008 election carried the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by eleven points. Between 2020 and 2024 the county moved four points toward the Republican candidate; the 2024 margin was sixty-seven points.
The economic context is severe: a median household income of $49,723 — among the lowest at this geographic scale — and a 22% poverty rate. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Mingo County and Fayette County.
