Demographics
Shoshone County anchored Idaho's historic silver-mining boom along the Coeur d'Alene belt, and its working-class industrial past makes it a rare inland Northwest county with a Democratic labor tradition — though recent cycles show that legacy fading fast.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin peaked at fifty-six points in 1896 and narrowed across the late twentieth century. The 2000 election carried the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by twelve points. Between 2020 and 2024 the county moved eight points toward the Republican candidate; the 2024 margin was forty-nine points.
The economic context is severe: a median household income of $55,527 — among the lowest at this geographic scale — and a 13% poverty rate. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Marion County and Reynolds County.
