Demographics
Home to Fort Cavazos (formerly Fort Hood), one of the largest U.S. military installations in the world, Coryell County combines a transient military population with a rural conservative base that has delivered Republican presidential margins above 35 points for over a decade.
The Republican margin here reached sixty points in 1972. Between 2020 and 2024 the county moved seven points toward the Republican candidate; the 2024 margin was forty-one points.
A population of 84,748, a 59% non-Hispanic-white share, and a median household income of $71,301 describe the county. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Nacogdoches County and Elko County. A non-English-speaking share of 16% reflects a meaningful Latino presence that votes, here, with the Republican grain.
