Demographics
Fairfax County's rapid demographic shift—driven by federal-sector employment and immigration from Asia and Latin America—has moved it from a competitive suburb into one of the most reliably Democratic large counties in the mid-Atlantic.
Fairfax County has leaned Democratic in recent presidential elections, reaching a Democratic margin of sixty points in 1912. Between 2020 and 2024 it moved seven points toward the Republican candidate — part of the sharpest rightward shift recorded among any group of places in the country.
Its demographics describe the shift: a 49% non-Hispanic-white share, a median household income of $153,637, and a population of 1,147,837. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Fairfax city and Mecklenburg County.
