Demographics
Douglas County sits east of the Cascades in Washington's dryland wheat belt, where sparse population and an agricultural economy have produced Republican presidential margins above 20 points in each of the last several cycles.
Douglas County has leaned Republican in recent presidential elections, reaching a Democratic margin of thirty-seven points in 1896. Between 2020 and 2024 it moved three points toward the Republican candidate — part of the sharpest rightward shift recorded among any group of places in the country.
Its demographics describe the shift: a 61% non-Hispanic-white share, a median household income of $80,363, and a population of 44,366. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Flathead County and Beaverhead County.
