Demographics
Mingo County, once a stronghold of union-driven Democratic loyalty rooted in its coal-mining heritage, has shifted so decisively that the 2024 presidential margin of R+73.8 ranks among the widest in West Virginia.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin peaked at fifty-nine points in 1964 and narrowed across the late twentieth century. The 2008 election carried the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by twelve points. Between 2020 and 2024 the county moved two points toward the Republican candidate; the 2024 margin was seventy-four points.
The economic context is severe: a median household income of $38,119 — among the lowest at this geographic scale — and a 32% poverty rate. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Logan County and Buchanan County.
