Demographics
With roughly 8,200 residents spread across the Allegheny Highlands, Pendleton County recorded an R+58.6 margin in 2024, placing it among the most heavily one-sided counties in a state that has shifted sharply over the past two decades.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin peaked at thirty-three points in 1912 and narrowed across the late twentieth century. The 2000 election carried the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by twenty-six points. Between 2020 and 2024 the county moved five points toward the Republican candidate; the 2024 margin was fifty-nine points.
The economic context is severe: a median household income of $64,931 — among the lowest at this geographic scale — and a 17% poverty rate. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Sibley County and Ohio County.
