Demographics
Daniels County sits in Montana's remote northeastern corner, where a sparse, agriculture-dependent population has delivered Republican presidential margins exceeding 60 points in recent cycles, making it among the state's most consistently one-sided counties.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin peaked at fifty-three points in 1936 and narrowed across the late twentieth century. The 1968 election carried the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by nine points. Between 2020 and 2024 the county moved six points toward the Republican candidate; the 2024 margin was sixty-six points.
The economic context is severe: a median household income of $55,625 — among the lowest at this geographic scale — and a 13% poverty rate. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Williams County and Preston County.
