San Juan County spans more than 7,800 square miles of southeastern Utah canyon country, with a population nearly evenly split between white and Native American residents — a demographic balance that has made its elections among the most litigated in the state.
San Juan County has leaned Republican in recent presidential elections, reaching a Democratic margin of ninety-one points in 1896. Between 2020 and 2024 it moved ten points toward the Republican candidate — part of the sharpest rightward shift recorded among any group of places in the country.
