Demographics
Douglas County, anchored by Superior and its union-heavy port economy, gave Democrats a 5-point margin in 2024 even as much of rural Wisconsin moved sharply right — a remnant of the Iron Range–style labor politics that once defined the western Great Lakes.
The Republican margin here reached fifty-seven points in 1904. Between 2020 and 2024 the county moved four points toward the Republican candidate; the 2024 margin was five points.
A population of 44,229, a 90% non-Hispanic-white share, and a median household income of $75,099 describe an agricultural county. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of St. Louis County and Carlton County.
