Carlton County's economy was long anchored by paper mills and the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, producing reliably Democratic margins. By 2024 it flipped narrowly Republican, a shift that mirrors working-class realignment across Minnesota's Iron Range corridor.
