Demographics
Home to Billings, Montana's largest city, Yellowstone County combines an urban commercial hub with surrounding ranching plains — a mix that still produces some of the most lopsided Republican margins of any high-population county in the state.
The Republican margin here reached forty-six points in 1904. Between 2020 and 2024 the county moved three points toward the Republican candidate; the 2024 margin was twenty-seven points.
A population of 168,957, a 86% non-Hispanic-white share, and a median household income of $76,570 describe the county. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Pondera County and Teton County.
