Demographics
Cumberland's blend of agricultural communities, a majority-minority population, and persistent economic hardship makes it one of New Jersey's genuine swing counties — its R+3.8 margin in 2024 reversed a Democratic lean held through much of the prior decade.
Cumberland County has leaned Republican in recent presidential elections, reaching a Democratic margin of forty-five points in 1964. Between 2020 and 2024 it moved ten points toward the Republican candidate — part of the sharpest rightward shift recorded among any group of places in the country.
Its demographics describe the shift: a 47% non-Hispanic-white share, a median household income of $67,436, and a population of 153,305. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Atlantic County and Clinton County.
