Harris County anchors the Texas Gulf Coast with a majority-minority electorate that has redrawn the state's competitive map — its 3.4 million residents make it the third-most-populous county in the nation.
Harris County has leaned Democratic in recent presidential elections, reaching a Democratic margin of seventy-six points in 1936. Between 2020 and 2024 it moved eight points toward the Republican candidate — part of the sharpest rightward shift recorded among any group of places in the country.
Its demographics describe the shift: a 34% non-Hispanic-white share, a median household income of $74,983, and a population of 4,838,303. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Loudoun County and Kane County.
