Demographics
Navajo County spans nearly 10,000 square miles of plateau and canyon country, with the Navajo and Hopi nations covering much of its interior. That reservation geography drives turnout patterns and ballot-access logistics unlike almost any other Arizona county.
Navajo County has leaned Republican in recent presidential elections, reaching a Democratic margin of forty-eight points in 1936. Between 2020 and 2024 it moved nine points toward the Republican candidate — part of the sharpest rightward shift recorded among any group of places in the country.
Its demographics describe the shift: a 45% non-Hispanic-white share, a median household income of $54,606, and a population of 108,415. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Wilkes County and Natchitoches Parish.
