For a quarter-century Florida was the closest large state in the country. It settled the 2000 election by 537 votes out of nearly six million, a margin of five thousandths of a point, and stayed within a point and a half in 2012 and 2016 — Barack Obama by nine-tenths, then Donald Trump by 1.2. That era has ended. Trump carried Florida by 3.4 points in 2020 and by 13.1 in 2024, a 9.7-point shift in margin — the largest of any 2020 battleground, and third-largest of any state after New York and New Jersey — turning the country’s longest-running battleground into Republican ground at the presidential level for three straight cycles.

The move was led from the south. Miami-Dade County, the state’s largest, had given Hillary Clinton a 29.6-point margin in 2016 and Joe Biden 7.3 in 2020; in 2024 it voted for Trump by 11.4 — the first time the county backed a Republican for president since 1988. Osceola County, around Kissimmee and heavily Puerto Rican, flipped to Trump by 1.5 points after years of Democratic majorities. Broward stayed Democratic but by 17.0 points, down from 29.8 in 2020, and Palm Beach by less than a point. The state’s Hispanic or Latino residents, 27.4 percent of the population, drove the largest part of the change.

Underneath sits a state reshaped by who moved in. Florida is the fourth-oldest state by median age, at 43.1 years, a retiree-and-transplant destination whose registered Republicans overtook registered Democrats in 2021 and led by more than 1.1 million by 2024 — a reversal from the 107,000-vote Democratic edge of 2020. The growth ran into Republican ground: the Tampa-to-Orlando I-4 corridor, where Hillsborough and Pinellas both flipped Republican; the retiree counties of the southwest Gulf coast; and the Panhandle, the most Republican corner, where Holmes County ran 80 points Republican. The Democratic vote now concentrates in Gadsden, Leon around Tallahassee, and college-town Alachua.
